EV charger installation across North Brisbane
We install Tesla Wall Connector, Zappi, EVnex, Ocular, Fronius Wattpilot and ABB chargers across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay. Three-phase 22kW installs run $1,500 to $2,200. Same-day service available.
Many homes in the North Lakes and Burpengary growth corridors are adding second vehicles, bigger air conditioning loads and more electrical demand, so proper charger installation and a switchboard check matter. Our EV charger installations are led by Lewis Cuthbertson, our EV charger installation specialist.
What's included in every install?
- Switchboard assessment and maximum demand check
- Installation of your EV charger (customer supplied, or we supply)
- Dedicated 6mm²+ circuit, up to 10m of cable
- Type A RCD / RCBO protection (AS/NZS 3000 compliant)
- Connection to a compliant switchboard
- Full testing and commissioning
- Energex EWR notification
- Digital Certificate of Compliance
Most installs are completed in 2 to 4 hours, whether it's a new build in Griffin or a 1970s home in Wavell Heights or Everton Park.
Where do you install EV chargers?
Our strongest coverage is North Lakes, Mango Hill, Griffin, Kallangur, Narangba, Burpengary, Morayfield and Caboolture. We also install across the inner northern suburbs including Chermside, Aspley, Carseldine, Wavell Heights, McDowall, Everton Park and Stafford, typically a 15 to 25 minute drive from our Mango Hill base.
Do you install EV chargers for businesses?
Yes. We install commercial charging for workplaces, car parks and strata properties. Commercial installs often involve 3-phase power, multiple charge points and load management, and we handle Energex applications for commercial connections. See our commercial electrician service.
How much does EV charger installation cost?
A standard single-phase 7kW install is $990 including GST, fixed price. Switchboard upgrades, longer cable runs or a 3-phase charger usually bring the total to $1,500 to $3,500.
Prices here are a guide. Every install is quoted individually on cable run, switchboard, access and difficulty, and you get a firm fixed-price quote in writing before any work starts.
What pushes the cost higher?
Cable run distance: many market quotes assume 10 to 15m. Detached garages or opposite-side installs can add $120 to $180 per metre elsewhere; our extra cable is $25 per metre.
Switchboard upgrades: older boards or insufficient capacity may need a new RCBO ($180 to $400) or a full switchboard upgrade ($1,320 to $3,850).
Three-phase power: if your home doesn't have it, an Energex upgrade adds $3,000 to $5,000+ and needs a separate network application.
Complex routing: drilling through brick or concrete slabs, or trenching under paths, adds labour and materials.
Solar integration: smart chargers with solar diversion (Zappi, Fronius Wattpilot) cost $200 to $400 more than basic units, but let you charge from excess solar.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Many North Brisbane homes do. EV chargers pull continuous loads older switchboards weren't designed for, so if yours lacks the capacity or protection, we'll recommend an upgrade. It's a safety and compliance requirement, not an upsell, and we'll tell you straight if the standard install is enough. For urgent faults, see our emergency electrician service.

| Installer or source | 7kW single-phase / 22kW three-phase |
|---|---|
| Connex Electrical: charger install (customer supplied), up to 10m cable, RCBO, testing, certification. Fixed price. | $990 / $1,500 to $2,200 |
| Brisbane local installers: similar scope. Some charge hourly ($150 to $200/hr), making the final price unpredictable. | $1,400 to $2,200 / $1,900 to $3,500 |
| Installation-only quotes: labour only, ideal conditions. Extras (cable runs over 5m, switchboard work) billed separately. | $700 to $1,500 / $1,000 to $2,000 |
| Hipages / ServiceSeeking aggregators: national ranges incl. hardware and install. Wide variance by postcode and scope. | $1,200 to $3,300 / N/A |
| DIY socket alternative: 32A industrial socket (not a hardwired charger), needs a portable cable. Popular with renters; limited to 7kW. | $600 to $750 / N/A |
Bottom line: our $990 single-phase install undercuts typical Brisbane pricing by $410 to $1,210 for equivalent scope, and our three-phase pricing sits at the lower end of the local market.
What to expect in your suburb
Every suburb has different electrical infrastructure. Here's what we commonly find, and why it matters for your install.
Not sure what your home needs? Call 0474 207 609 for a realistic phone estimate based on your switchboard age and charger location, confirmed with a site inspection.
North Lakes, Griffin and Mango Hill
Estates like Capestone, The Village and North Harbour, and Griffin, were built from 2005 onwards with modern switchboards, safety switches and often 3-phase supply. Many Griffin homes have 3-phase as standard, ideal for 22kW chargers without an Energex upgrade.
Most installs are straightforward: dedicated circuit, 5 to 8m cable run, standard RCBO. Typical install: $990 to $1,200. The main variable is cable distance, as some North Lakes homes have the switchboard at the front and the garage at the rear.
Solar uptake is high here (estimated 45 to 55% of homes), so we install more Zappi chargers with solar diversion here than anywhere else.
Kallangur, Murrumba Downs and Dakabin
Mixed 1980s to 2000s stock. Older Kallangur homes (pre-1995) often need a switchboard upgrade first: look for ceramic fuses, no safety switches or Clipsal metal-case boards. Newer Murrumba Downs sections (Parkview, Freshwater) have compliant boards. Dakabin is mostly 1990s stock, usually fine without switchboard work.
Typical install: $990 to $1,800 (higher end includes a switchboard upgrade).
Burpengary, Narangba and Morayfield
Burpengary East and The Meadows have modern infrastructure like North Lakes, but original Burpengary homes (west of the highway) are often 1970s to 80s builds with undersized main switchboards that almost always need an upgrade.
Narangba is mostly 2000s housing and generally straightforward, though rear garages via side driveways often mean 15 to 20m cable runs. Morayfield varies: newer estates are fine, older sections near the town centre share Kallangur's pre-1995 switchboard issues.
Petrie, Lawnton and Strathpine
Mostly 1970s to 1990s housing. Switchboard upgrades are needed in roughly 60% of installs, but they're relatively straightforward on single-storey homes with accessible meter boards.
Most homes are single-phase. A 3-phase upgrade needs an Energex application and meter board changes: allow 4 to 6 weeks and $2,000 to $5,000 extra. For most homeowners a 7kW single-phase charger is plenty (full charge overnight).
Redcliffe, Rothwell and Deception Bay
The peninsula's challenge is salt air corrosion. External switchboards and cable runs in Redcliffe, Margate and Scarborough often need replacing before we can safely connect a charger. We always use marine-grade cable glands and UV-rated conduit here.
Rothwell's newer estates have modern infrastructure. Deception Bay is mostly 1980s stock, with switchboard upgrades needed about 40% of the time. Typical peninsula install: $1,200 to $2,200 (higher than average due to corrosion mitigation).
Caboolture
Our northern boundary. Many acreage properties have long cable runs (30m+ from meter board to garage or carport) needing larger cable to manage voltage drop and often trenching. Typically $1,500 to $3,000 depending on distance and ground. Newer estates (Caboolture South) are straightforward.
Chermside, Aspley, Stafford, Wavell Heights
Older 1950s to 1980s stock where switchboard upgrades are common. Many homes have carports, needing weather-rated mounting and longer runs from a front meter board. More townhouses and duplexes too, which can involve body corporate approval and shared switchboards. We handle the body corporate documentation and sub-metering.
Carseldine, McDowall and Everton Park
Carseldine mixes newer townhouses (near Carseldine Urban Village) with 1970s homes. McDowall is mostly 1980s to 1990s with compliant boards but often limited spare breaker space. Everton Park is like Stafford: older, carport-heavy, sometimes needing creative cable routing.

Solar EV charging in North Brisbane
A typical 6.6kW solar system can add 30 to 40 km of range a day to your EV. Charging from the grid at 30c/kWh versus your own solar at effectively $0 can save a typical Brisbane EV owner $1,200 to $1,800 a year.
We install the CT clamp, configure solar diversion and test the complete system during installation. If your solar system is undersized, we can quote additional panel capacity through our solar partners.
How solar EV charging works
Brisbane averages 4 to 5 hours of peak solar output a day (more in summer). A smart charger like the Zappi monitors solar production via a CT clamp on your meter board. When your panels produce more than your home uses, the surplus goes into your EV instead of being exported at a low feed-in tariff (currently 5 to 7c/kWh in SE QLD).
Zappi ECO modes
- ECO+: charges only from 100% surplus solar, zero grid import. May pause when clouds roll in.
- ECO: prioritises solar but draws a minimum from the grid to keep the session going on partly cloudy days.
- Fast: full rate regardless of solar, for when you need a quick full charge.
Best setup for solar + EV
- 6.6kW solar system minimum for meaningful surplus after home loads
- North-facing panels to maximise midday generation
- Schedule charging for the 9am to 3pm window
- Zappi or EVnex with a CT clamp for true solar diversion, not just timer scheduling
Solar + EV compliance
- Export limiting: Energex limits single-phase solar export to 5kW. Adding a diverting charger doesn't change it but may need inverter settings adjusted.
- CT clamp: required at the meter board for solar diversion, included in our Zappi installs.
- Connection agreement: your existing solar agreement stays valid; no new application needed.
Charging speed by vehicle
Every EV sold in Australia since 2019 uses the Type 2 (Mennekes) connector for AC charging, so every wall charger we install works with every EV.
Tesla vehicles in Australia use standard Type 2 (not the US connector), so you don't need a Tesla-branded charger, though the Wall Connector offers tighter app integration.
| Single-phase 7kW | Full charge |
|---|---|
| Tesla Model 3/Y (7kW AC, ~40 km/hr) | 7 to 10 hrs |
| BYD Atto 3 (7kW AC, ~40 km/hr) | 8 to 9 hrs |
| MG ZS EV (7kW AC, ~40 km/hr) | 7 hrs |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 (11kW AC*, ~40 km/hr) | 8 to 10 hrs |
| Kia EV6 (11kW AC*, ~40 km/hr) | 8 to 10 hrs |
| BYD Dolphin (7kW AC, ~40 km/hr) | 6 to 7 hrs |
| Polestar 2 (11kW AC*, ~40 km/hr) | 8 to 10 hrs |
| Mercedes EQA/EQB (11kW AC*, ~40 km/hr) | 8 to 10 hrs |
| GWM Ora (6.6kW AC, ~35 km/hr) | 8 hrs |
* Capped at 7kW on single-phase supply. Three-phase needed for full speed.
Three-phase (22kW) charging speeds
Common in newer builds in North Lakes and Griffin. Tesla Model 3/Y Long Range, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Polestar 2 charge at 11kW (~65 km of range per hour). Mercedes EQS/EQE at 22kW (~130 km/hr).
Not sure if you have three-phase? We check at the quote visit. Upgrading from single to three-phase needs an Energex application and typically costs $2,000 to $5,000 depending on distance from the street transformer.

Energex and QLD compliance, handled
Every hardwired EV charger in South-East Queensland must meet Energex network requirements and Queensland electrical safety law. We handle all the paperwork, so you never need to contact Energex or a regulator yourself.
- Maximum demand assessment before installation
- Correct cable sizing for continuous EV load
- Type A RCD selection and installation
- Full circuit testing
- Certificate of Compliance issued same day
- Energex EWR lodged within 5 business days
- 3-phase pre-connection applications if required
- Body corporate documentation for strata installs
Energex Electrical Work Request (EWR)
Under the Electricity Regulation 2006 (QLD), your electrician must lodge an EWR with Energex within 5 business days of any hardwired EV charger installation. It's a notification, not an approval, and we lodge it at no extra cost. Standard 7kW single-phase chargers need no pre-approval. For 22kW three-phase installs or where total load exceeds 15kVA, Energex may require a pre-connection application, which we also handle.
AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules
- Dedicated circuit with appropriately rated cable (minimum 6mm² for 32A circuits)
- Type A RCD to detect DC fault currents. Standard Type AC RCDs aren't sufficient.
- Maximum demand assessment so total demand doesn't exceed supply capacity
- Continuous load cable sizing: EV chargers run 4+ hours, so cable must be rated for 100% of circuit current
AS/NZS 61851.1 EV charging standard
- Mode 3 charging: permanent wall chargers must be dedicated EV supply equipment with control pilot, not Mode 2 portable devices
- Control pilot: the charger confirms the vehicle is ready and connected before energising the cable
- Earth fault protection: Type A RCD (minimum 30mA) with DC fault detection
We install only Mode 3 compliant chargers from brands meeting both AS/NZS 61851 and AS/NZS 3000.
Queensland Electrical Safety Act 2002
All electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. Connex holds QLD Electrical Contractor Licence #92217. DIY EV charger installation is illegal in Queensland, even for qualified electricians working on their own property without a contractor licence.
Certificate of Compliance
Issued after every install (formerly Certificate of Testing). It certifies the work meets AS/NZS 3000:2018, records all test results, is needed for insurance claims on the installation, and must be kept by the owner. We provide a digital copy.
Strata and body corporate installs
- Body corporate approval (ordinary resolution under the Body Corporate and Community Management Act 1997)
- Common property modification agreement if cable runs cross common areas
- Sub-metering for individual billing (we install sub-meters)
- Load management plan if multiple chargers are proposed
We've completed multiple body corporate EV installs across North Brisbane and can prepare the technical documentation your body corporate manager needs to table the motion.

EV charger installation FAQs
How much does EV charger installation cost in North Brisbane?
Standard installation starts at $990 incl. GST for a wall-mounted 7kW charger on a dedicated circuit up to 15 metres from your switchboard. With a switchboard upgrade, longer cable runs or a 3-phase charger, expect $1,500 to $3,500. We quote fixed prices upfront.
Do I need Energex approval to install an EV charger?
Your electrician must lodge an Electrical Work Request (EWR) with Energex for any hardwired EV charger. It's a standard notification, not a lengthy approval, and we handle it as part of every install.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
Most standard installs take 2 to 4 hours. With a switchboard upgrade or a cable run over 15 metres, allow half a day. Most North Brisbane installs are done in a single visit.
Can I charge my EV from my solar panels?
Yes. A smart charger like the Zappi can divert excess solar straight to your car. On a typical 6.6kW system you can add 30 to 40 km of range a day from solar alone in summer.
What's the difference between a 7kW and 22kW charger?
A 7kW charger runs on single-phase power (standard in most Brisbane homes) and adds roughly 40 km of range an hour. A 22kW charger needs 3-phase power and charges about three times faster. Most households charging overnight only need 7kW.
Which EV charger brands do you install?
Tesla Wall Connector, Zappi (myenergi), Ocular, EVnex, ABB and generic Type 2 units. All are Australian-certified and compatible with every EV sold in Australia.
Will my switchboard need upgrading for an EV charger?
If it's older (pre-safety switch era) or near capacity, yes. We assess it at the quote visit. Switchboard upgrades typically cost $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST.
Can I just plug my EV into a normal power point?
Technically yes, with the portable charger that comes with most EVs, but a 10A outlet adds only about 10 km of range an hour and isn't designed for sustained overnight load. A dedicated wall charger is safer, about 4x faster, and what every manufacturer recommends.
Do you install EV chargers for businesses?
Yes, for workplaces, car parks and strata properties across North Brisbane, including 3-phase power, multiple charge points, load management and Energex commercial applications.
Is an EV charger covered by a warranty?
The hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty (typically 3 to 5 years). We give a lifetime workmanship guarantee on the installation itself: wiring, circuit protection and mounting.
What suburbs do you cover for EV charger installation?
All of North Brisbane and Moreton Bay, including North Lakes, Mango Hill, Kallangur, Burpengary, Redcliffe, Caboolture, Narangba, Petrie, Lawnton, Griffin, Murrumba Downs, Carseldine, McDowall, Everton Park, Wavell Heights, Aspley, Chermside and Stafford.
Do I need a separate circuit for an EV charger?
Yes. Australian standards require a dedicated circuit with its own breaker and RCD for hardwired chargers. We install it as part of every EV charger installation.
