Charging an EV by the bay
Redcliffe is one of the oldest settled places in Queensland, and its homes, salty breeze and unit blocks each change how a charger should go in.
Matthew Flinders landed here in 1799, Queensland's first penal settlement was established in 1824, and from the 1880s the town grew as a seaside resort with early subdivisions such as Portwood Estate and Ramsgate Estate. Many Redcliffe homes have been extended and rewired in stages over decades, so the switchboard is the first thing we look at. A board with ceramic fuses, no room for a new circuit or no safety switches needs attention before a 7 kW charger can be added safely.
The suburb sits low on the western shore of Moreton Bay, at about 12 m elevation, and salt carries well inland on an onshore breeze. Chargers on open carports or exposed walls get the same treatment as anything else outdoors here: weather-rated enclosures, stainless or coated fixings, sealed glands and cable runs kept out of standing water.
Since the first high-rise went up on Marine Parade in 1974, the coastline has filled with apartments and mixed-use buildings. If you own a unit, your car space is probably on common property and fed from a shared board, which turns a simple install into a body corporate project. We can help with that too.
Our team travels about 12 km east from our Mango Hill base. Connex Electrical was established in 2014 and is led by Darren Standring, a qualified electrician since 1997. Also see Air conditioning installation in Redcliffe and Electrician Redcliffe.
Older Redcliffe homes: when the switchboard needs work first
A 7 kW charger draws about 32 amps for hours at a time, which is a much heavier and longer load than most household appliances. Older boards with rewireable fuses, ageing mains or no free space cannot always take it safely.
We assess the board before quoting. If an upgrade is needed it is priced at $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST depending on the board and wiring. Our switchboard upgrade page and the article do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger explain the signs.
Protecting an outdoor charger from salt air
Salt spray corrodes screws, brackets and terminal connections faster than inland weather does. We use stainless or coated fixings, keep cable entries on the underside of enclosures and seal penetrations so moisture cannot track in.
Where you can, mounting the charger under cover in a garage or deep carport adds years to its life. Rinsing an exposed charger with fresh water now and then also helps.
Units and apartment car parks along the foreshore
In a unit block, the charger usually needs body corporate approval, a cable route through the basement or car park, and a decision on metering. We prepare a scope the committee can review and, where possible, connect the charger to your own unit's supply.
Some buildings are better suited to a shared charging setup planned for the whole car park. Our apartment and strata EV charging guide walks through both options.

Redcliffe EV charger costs, explained
Your price depends mostly on the switchboard and the distance to your car, and we tell you both before any work starts.
If your board is in good order and the charger goes near it, the install is a fixed $990 incl. GST with your own 7 kW charger. Extra cable costs $25 per metre. If the circuit needs its own RCBO safety switch added, that is $180 to $400 incl. GST.
Older homes needing a new board add $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST, and we explain exactly why before you agree. For running costs once you are charging, see our EV charging cost vs petrol article.

Redcliffe EV charger FAQs
Will my older Redcliffe home need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Sometimes. If the board still has rewireable fuses, no safety switches or no space for a new circuit, an upgrade is usually needed first. We check before quoting, and upgrades are $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST.
Does salt air damage EV chargers?
Over time it can, mainly through corroded fixings and connections. Mounting the charger under cover, using stainless or coated fixings and sealing cable entries all reduce the risk significantly.
Can I install a charger in my Redcliffe apartment car space?
Often yes, with body corporate approval. The main questions are the cable route, which supply the charger connects to and how the power is metered. We prepare a scope your committee can assess.
Can a charger go on an open carport near the water?
Yes, as long as the charger is rated for outdoor use and installed with weather and corrosion protection. We position it to avoid direct rain where possible and keep cables clear of pooling water.
How much does a basic install cost in Redcliffe?
A standard single-phase 7 kW install is from $990 incl. GST, fixed price, when you supply the charger and the run is standard. Extra cable is $25 per metre, and any board work is quoted separately.
Do I need permission from Energex?
Some installs need an Energex electrical work request, and we lodge it for you where required. Our Energex EV charger rules guide has the details.
Can I use a standard power point instead of a wall charger?
You can charge slowly from a standard outlet, but it is not ideal for daily use, especially on older wiring. A dedicated wall charger on its own protected circuit is safer and much faster.
