Home EV charging in a master-planned suburb
North Lakes was planned from scratch, and that makes most homes here among the simplest places in Moreton Bay to add a wall charger.
Lend Lease announced the North Lakes community in 1995, and a 1999 agreement with CSIRO pushed the estate toward sustainable, solar-passive building. If your home has solar today, it makes sense to let the car soak up midday generation instead of exporting it for a low feed-in rate. We match the charger and its settings to the inverter you already have, so the car becomes the household battery you drive.
With 23,030 residents at the 2021 census and a median age of 31 in 2011, this is a young, family suburb. Buses are the only public transport, so most households drive the Bruce Highway every day and many are swapping one of those cars for an EV. A typical job here is a 7 kW charger on the garage wall a few metres from a modern switchboard, which is exactly what our fixed $990 incl. GST price covers.
Not every home fits that picture. Townhouses and attached homes share driveways, car parks and sometimes electrical supply, and a body corporate usually has a say before anything is fixed to common property. We plan those jobs differently and give you the paperwork the committee needs.
Connex Electrical is based next door in Mango Hill, established in 2014 and led by Darren Standring, a qualified electrician since 1997, so North Lakes jobs are a short trip for our team. Also see Air conditioning installation in North Lakes and Electrician North Lakes.
Adding a charger to a home that already has solar
A solar-aware charger reads a current sensor at the switchboard and lifts or drops its charging rate to follow your surplus generation, so on a sunny Saturday the car fills mostly from the roof.
We fit the sensor, set the charger's export and load limits, and check the combined load of the charger, solar and air conditioning against your supply. Read more in our guide to EV charging from solar in Brisbane.
Townhouses and body corporate approval
If your garage or car space is on common property, the body corporate must approve the charger before it goes in. We provide a written scope showing the cable route, where it is metered from, the circuit protection and how the work is certified, which is usually what a committee asks for.
Where the car space is fed from a shared or common-area board, we work out whether the circuit can come from your own meter instead so you pay only for your own charging. Our strata EV charging guide covers the questions committees typically raise.
Why newer North Lakes switchboards usually cope
Homes built from the late 1990s onward generally have modern boards with spare space and safety switches already in place. That usually means a new dedicated circuit and RCBO is all a 7 kW charger needs.
We still run a load check on every job, because a big ducted air conditioner, pool pump and charger running together can push a single-phase supply hard.

What an EV charger costs in North Lakes
Most North Lakes garages fall into our standard fixed-price install, with clear add-on prices if your home needs more.
The $990 incl. GST price covers a single-phase 7 kW charger you have already bought, mounted on the garage wall on a standard cable run from the switchboard, with its own circuit, testing and a certificate of compliance. If the charger needs to reach a car space further away, extra cable is $25 per metre, and we tell you the total before we start.
Solar-aware setups vary with the charger and inverter brand, so we quote them after a quick look at your board. There is no callout fee on booked work. For a wider look at costs, see our EV charging versus petrol comparison.

North Lakes EV charger FAQs
Can I charge my EV from the solar panels I already have in North Lakes?
Yes, in most cases. A solar-aware charger with a current sensor at the switchboard can match its charging rate to your surplus generation. We check your inverter and charger model and quote the setup, then configure it on install day.
Do I need body corporate approval for a charger in my North Lakes townhouse?
Usually yes, if any part of the charger, cable or car space is common property. We supply a written scope, cable route and compliance details for the committee. Approval should be in place before we book the install.
How much does it cost to install an EV charger in a North Lakes garage?
A standard single-phase 7 kW install is from $990 incl. GST, fixed price, when you supply the charger. Extra cable beyond the standard run is $25 per metre. Most attached garages in North Lakes fall within the standard price.
Will a charger overload my house if I also run ducted air conditioning?
It should not, provided the load is checked and the charger is set correctly. We calculate your maximum demand and can set the charger to reduce its rate when the house is drawing heavily. Some chargers can do this automatically with a load sensor.
Is a 22 kW charger worth it for a North Lakes home?
Only if your home has a three-phase supply and your car accepts three-phase AC charging. Most homes here are single-phase, and a 7 kW charger refills a typical daily commute overnight. Our 7 kW vs 22 kW guide explains the difference.
Does Energex need to know about my EV charger?
Some installs require an Energex electrical work request, and we lodge it for you where it is needed. See our guide to Energex rules for EV chargers for more detail.
Which charger should I buy before booking?
Pick a charger that suits your car, your supply and whether you want solar matching. If you are unsure, call us before you buy and we will tell you what works with your board and inverter.
