What actually drives the price up
When an EV charger install costs more than $990, it’s almost always one of these five things. Understanding them means you can get an accurate quote without surprises.
1. Distance from the switchboard to the charger
The single biggest variable. If your switchboard is in the garage and the charger goes on the garage wall two metres away, that’s cheap. If the switchboard is at the front of the house and you want to charge at a carport out the back, that’s a long cable run — more cable, more labour, sometimes conduit or trenching.
2. Trenching or going through difficult walls
Running a cable under a driveway or across a yard to a detached carport means trenching, which adds cost. Double-brick or rendered walls, or a run through a roof cavity in a Queenslander, also add time.
3. Whether your switchboard needs upgrading first
An older switchboard may not have the spare capacity or the safety devices to add a 7kW EV load. If it’s a ceramic-fuse or crowded board, we may need to upgrade it before the charger goes in — typically an $800–$2,000+ job on the Brisbane market, quoted separately after assessment. 4. Single-phase vs three-phase power
Most Brisbane homes are single-phase, which comfortably runs a 7kW charger — plenty for overnight charging. If you have (or want) three-phase for a 22kW charger, the charger hardware and install both cost more. For nearly all homeowners, single-phase 7kW is the right call. 5. Load management or solar integration
If you want the charger to balance against your home’s total load, or to charge from surplus solar (like a Zappi in ECO+ mode), that’s extra configuration. It’s worthwhile for a lot of North Brisbane homes with rooftop solar, but it adds to the base price.

Are there rebates for home EV chargers in Queensland?
Short and honest answer: there is currently no direct Queensland Government rebate for home EV charger installation. The former Queensland Zero Emission Vehicle rebate applied to vehicle purchases and has closed. What can still help your running costs:
- Off-peak electricity tariffs (such as Energex Tariff 33) let you charge overnight at a lower rate.
- Rooftop solar — charging from your own surplus solar is the cheapest energy you’ll ever put in the car.
Be wary of any installer implying a government rebate covers your install — for home chargers in QLD, that’s not currently the case.
What does it cost to actually run an EV once it’s installed?
The install is one-off; the charging is ongoing — and this is where EVs pull ahead. Charging at home on an off-peak tariff typically costs in the order of $3–$5 per 100km. Charging from surplus rooftop solar can be close to free. By comparison, public fast chargers often work out to $10–$15 per 100km, and petrol for a comparable car is usually more again. For most North Brisbane households, home charging pays back the install over time.
