EV Charger Installation Wavell Heights
Extending, raising or renovating a post-war Wavell Heights home? It is the cheapest moment to add EV charging, and we can plan it with your builder.

Post-war homes and the renovation window
Wavell Heights was built out in the post-war expansion of northern Brisbane, and many of those homes are now being opened up, extended or rebuilt underneath.
Once called West Nundah, the suburb was renamed in 1941 after Field Marshal Lord Wavell. The state primary school opened in 1948 and Wavell State High in 1959, and enrolments in the 1950s and 60s topped 900 as young families filled the new streets. Today it is still a family suburb: about one in five residents was under 15 at the 2011 census, and the population has grown to over 10,000.
A lot of the original houses are now on their second or third life. When walls are open, the floor is up or the house is being lifted to build in underneath, running a charger cable costs a fraction of what it would after the plasterboard goes back on. A new garage under the house is the perfect spot for a charger, and the cable can go in before the slab or linings.
The other piece is the switchboard. Many post-war boards were never meant to feed a modern kitchen, ducted air and a car. If your renovation already includes a new board, we can size it with space and capacity for a charger so you are not paying to change it twice. Our switchboard and EV charger guide explains what to look for.
Wavell Heights is about 10.5 km north of the CBD, and we travel down from our Mango Hill base for each install. Also see Air conditioning installation in Wavell Heights and Electrician Wavell Heights.
Pre-wiring now, charger later
Not ready to buy an EV yet? We can run and terminate a suitably sized cable to the garage during your renovation, ready for a charger to be fitted in a short visit later.
That avoids chasing walls or digging up a new driveway down the track.
Working alongside your builder
We are happy to coordinate with your builder or project manager on timing, so cable goes in at rough-in and the charger goes on at fit-off.
Tell us your build stage when you call and we will fit around it.
Heritage-listed homes in the area
Wavell Heights has a number of places on the Brisbane Heritage Register, including Anzac Cottage on Rode Road and several old farmhouses. If your property is listed, check what can change on the outside before planning a charger location.

What EV charging costs in Wavell Heights
In an existing home with a garage near the board, a 7 kW install is $990 incl. GST. During a renovation, the cost of running cable is often lower because access is easy.
If your renovation includes a switchboard replacement, building charger capacity into that board is far cheaper than a second upgrade later. We price the board and the charger circuit together.
Extra cable is $25 per metre beyond the standard run. We do not include rebates in any of our prices.
| Wavell Heights EV costs | Price (incl. GST) |
|---|---|
| 7 kW charger installed, standard run | From $990 |
| Extra cable beyond standard length | $25 per metre |
| RCBO for the charger circuit | $180 to $400 |
| Switchboard upgrade with charger capacity | $1,320 to $3,850 |
| Three-phase 22 kW charger | $1,500 to $2,200 |
| Solar-aware charger or renovation pre-wire | Quoted |

Wavell Heights EV charger FAQs
Should I install the EV charger cable during my renovation even if I do not own an EV?
Yes, if you think you will buy one in the next few years. Running cable while walls are open costs much less than retrofitting later. We terminate it safely so a charger can be added in a short visit.
We are building in under our Wavell Heights house. Where should the charger go?
Usually on the wall closest to where the car parks, with the cable coming from the board inside the new space. We confirm the spot from your plans so it does not clash with doors or storage.
Can the new switchboard in my renovation handle a charger?
It can if it is sized for it. Tell us about the charger when the board is being planned, and we will allow for the extra circuit and load. Upgrades are $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST.
Do I need a separate electrician from my builder's?
Not necessarily. If your builder already has an electrician, they may be able to add the charger. If you want an EV-focused installer, we are happy to coordinate with your builder.
Can I still get a charger without renovating?
Of course. Most installs are in existing homes with a carport or garage. A standard 7 kW install is $990 incl. GST, with a board check first on older homes. Our 7 kW vs 22 kW guide helps you pick the right size.
How long does a charger take to fit once the renovation is finished?
If the cable was pre-run, fit-off is quick, often under an hour or two. A full install from scratch usually takes a few hours. See how long EV installs take.
Does Energex need to be notified?
In many cases yes, and we lodge the electrical work request for you. Our Energex EV guide has the details.
