Quick answer: The best home EV charger for most Brisbane homes is a smart 7kW single-phase Level 2 charger. If you have rooftop solar, the myenergi Zappi is the standout for charging from surplus solar. Tesla owners are well served by the Tesla Wall Connector. The Fronius Wattpilot suits homes with Fronius solar, and Ocular and EVnex are solid, well-priced all-rounders. Charger hardware typically runs $800–$1,500, with a standard installation from $990. The “best” one depends on whether you have solar, which car you drive, and whether you want app control.
I’m Lee, lead electrician at Connex Electrical, and I install these chargers across North Brisbane most weeks. There’s no single “best” charger — there’s the best one for your home. This guide walks through the chargers we fit and trust, what each is good at, and how to pick without overspending on features you won’t use.
First: do you need a “smart” charger?
Home chargers come in two broad types:
- Basic Level 2 chargers — plug in, charge at 7kW, done. Reliable and cheaper. Fine if you don’t have solar and don’t care about scheduling.
- Smart chargers — add app control, scheduling to off-peak tariffs, load management, and (crucially) the ability to charge from surplus solar. Worth it for solar homes and anyone who wants to charge on the cheapest power.
For most Brisbane homes — especially the many with rooftop solar — a smart 7kW charger pays for itself through cheaper charging. If you’re weighing the running-cost side, our EV charger cost guide breaks down home vs public charging.
The best home EV chargers we install
myenergi Zappi — best for solar homes
The Zappi is the one I recommend most often for homes with solar. Its standout feature is ECO and ECO+ modes, which charge the car from your surplus solar rather than the grid — effectively free energy. It also does scheduled off-peak charging and load balancing. If you have (or plan to add) rooftop solar, this is the smart pick. Available single-phase (7kW) and three-phase.
Tesla Wall Connector — best for Tesla owners
If you drive a Tesla, the Wall Connector is a clean, fast, well-integrated choice — controlled through the Tesla app, sleek hardware, and up to 7kW on single-phase (higher on three-phase). It works with non-Tesla EVs too (Type 2 connector), but its best integration is with Tesla vehicles.
Fronius Wattpilot — best for Fronius solar homes
If your solar system is Fronius, the Wattpilot integrates neatly with it for solar-aware charging, similar in concept to the Zappi’s solar modes. A strong choice when you want your charger and solar inverter from the same ecosystem.
Ocular — best value all-rounder
Ocular chargers (including models with built-in cables and app control) are a well-priced, reliable option for homes that want smart features without a premium badge. A common sensible middle-ground choice.
EVnex — solid smart charger
EVnex offers dependable, app-connected Level 2 charging with good build quality — another strong all-rounder for a straightforward, future-proof home setup.

Tethered vs untethered: cable or socket?
A practical choice that matters day to day:
- Tethered — the cable is permanently attached. Most convenient: just grab and plug in. Slightly less tidy when not in use.
- Untethered (socketed) — you plug your own cable in each time. Neater on the wall, and future-proof if connector standards change, but a little less convenient.
For a home you use every day, most people prefer tethered for the convenience. In Australia, Type 2 is the standard connector.
What does a home EV charger cost?
Charger hardware typically runs $800–$1,500 depending on brand and features, and a standard single-phase installation is from $990 at Connex — including the dedicated circuit, RCD protection, Energex lodgement and Certificate of Compliance. Smart/solar chargers sit at the higher end of the hardware range but usually earn it back through cheaper charging. How to choose the right one
- Have solar? Go smart and solar-aware (Zappi, or Wattpilot if you have Fronius solar).
- Drive a Tesla? The Wall Connector is the neatest fit.
- Want reliable and well-priced? Ocular or EVnex.
- Single-phase or three-phase? Most homes are single-phase 7kW — plenty for overnight charging. See our 7kW vs 22kW guide.

Tethered chargers have a permanently attached cable and are the most convenient for daily home use. Untethered (socketed) chargers are neater on the wall and more future-proof but require you to plug in your own cable each time. Most homeowners who charge every day prefer tethered. In Australia the Type 2 connector is standard.
Yes. In Australia home chargers use the Type 2 connector, so any Type 2 charger works with a Tesla and the Tesla Wall Connector works with other Type 2 EVs. The Tesla Wall Connector simply integrates most neatly with Tesla vehicles and the Tesla app.
