Plain advice for first-time EV owners
Plenty of Carseldine calls start with the same question: do I actually need a wall charger, and what will the house need to run one?
Carseldine took its name in 1975, after William Carseldine, a fencing contractor who arrived in 1854 and settled at nearby Bald Hills. It is a mainly residential suburb, and a varied one. At the 2016 census, more than one in five residents were 65 or older, while about one in six were under 15. That mix shows up in our enquiries: retirees swapping a petrol sedan for a small EV, and young families adding an electric car to the driveway.
Both groups want the same thing, an honest answer about what they need. For a car that does local trips and the occasional drive into the city, a standard 7 kW wall charger is usually the sweet spot. It refills a typical day's driving in an hour or two overnight and is safer for daily use than leaning on a standard power point.
Commuters are part of the picture too. About two thirds of working residents drove to work in 2016, with around 15% using public transport, much of it through Carseldine station on the North Coast line. If you park at home most of the day, solar charging may suit you. If the car is away all day, overnight charging on a suitable tariff makes more sense.
Carseldine is roughly 15 km north of the CBD along Gympie Road, and we come down from our Mango Hill base for every job. Also see Air conditioning installation in Carseldine and Electrician Carseldine.
What a standard install actually includes
The $990 incl. GST price covers installing your supplied 7 kW charger on a dedicated circuit, a standard cable run from the board, testing with your car and a certificate of compliance.
Extras such as longer runs ($25 per metre), an RCBO ($180 to $400) or a switchboard upgrade are only added when your home needs them, and you see them in writing first.
Townhouses and newer complexes
The former QUT campus was earmarked in 2016 for the Carseldine Urban Village, planned with around 900 homes. If you live in any townhouse or unit complex, the body corporate normally has a say in charger installs.

Carseldine EV charger installation prices
Most first-time installs in Carseldine homes are a single 7 kW charger at our fixed $990 incl. GST.
If you have not bought a charger yet, ask us before you do. Some models suit solar better, some are simpler to use, and a few need extra parts that change the install. A short conversation can save you money.
We leave rebates out of our quotes. What we write down is the full price incl. GST.

Carseldine EV charger FAQs
Do I really need a wall charger, or can I use a power point?
A dedicated wall charger is the safer, faster choice for daily charging. Standard power points are not designed for hours of continuous high load. A 7 kW charger also adds range several times faster.
How long will it take to charge my car at home in Carseldine?
A 7 kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50 km of range per hour, depending on the car. For most local driving, an hour or two overnight tops you up. A flat battery takes longer, often a full night.
Can I charge while the car is parked at home during the day?
Yes, and if you have rooftop solar a solar-aware charger can use your surplus. It works best for people who are home in daylight hours. See charging your EV from solar.
I live in a townhouse. Can I still get a charger?
Often yes, with body corporate approval. We can provide a written scope showing the cable route and how the charger connects to your own meter.
How much will charging add to my power bill?
It depends on your tariff and how far you drive, but it is usually well below the cost of petrol for the same distance. Our charging vs petrol guide has examples.
How long is the installer at my house?
A standard install is usually done in a few hours, including testing and handover. Board upgrades take longer and are booked accordingly. Where your supply needs it, we also lodge the Energex EWR; see our Energex rules guide.
Nearby suburbs we cover
We install EV chargers all around Carseldine and further up into Moreton Bay.
