Charging in a suburb that keeps getting denser

Chermside was described at the 2016 census as one of Brisbane's fastest-developing suburbs, and that changes how EV charging gets installed here.

The suburb started life as Downfall Creek, named for the creek travellers struggled to cross on the way to the Gympie goldfields, and took the Chermside name in 1904. Housing really took off after World War II, and many of those post-war homes are still here. Since then the population has climbed from about 8,170 in 2011 to 11,426 in 2021, much of it in units and townhouses close to Westfield Chermside and the hospitals.

So in Chermside we see two very different kinds of EV job. In a freestanding post-war house, the main question is the switchboard. Boards from that era were built for a few lights, a fridge and a stove, and many have been patched over the decades. Before a charger is added, we check whether the board has room, modern RCD protection and a main switch that can handle a long overnight load.

In a unit or townhouse, the question is usually who owns the car park wiring. Your space may be on common property, your meter may be in a shared meter room some distance away, and the body corporate will usually want to approve the work. We help you put together what the committee needs to see.

We travel down to Chermside, about 10 km north of the CBD, from our Mango Hill base, and every install is completed by a licensed Connex electrician. Also see Air conditioning installation in Chermside and Electrician Chermside.

Units and townhouses: the body corporate process

Most complexes need approval before any work touches common property. We can provide a written scope showing the proposed cable route, how the charger is metered to your lot and the circuit protection we will use.

Our guide to EV chargers in apartments and strata explains what committees typically ask and how to make the request straightforward.

Long runs from a shared meter room

In a complex, the charger is usually supplied from your own unit's meter so you pay for your own charging. That can mean a longer cable run through the car park, charged at $25 per metre beyond the standard run.

We measure the route on site and give you the full figure before the body corporate application goes in, so the committee and you see the same scope.

Post-war houses and their switchboards

Old fuse boards, crowded boards and low-rated main switches are common in Chermside's older homes. Where an upgrade is needed, it is priced at $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST. See our switchboard upgrade page for what is involved.

EV charger installs for every Chermside home type

The job looks different in a post-war house and a unit car park, so we scope each one on site.

Freestanding houses

A 7 kW charger in your garage or carport on its own circuit, from $990 incl. GST on a standard run.

Units and townhouses

Chargers wired from your own meter to your allocated car space, with a scope written for body corporate approval.

Board upgrades for older homes

When a post-war board cannot safely carry an EV load, we replace it with a modern board and RCBO protection.

Chermside EV charger installation costs

Houses with a garage near the board usually come in at our fixed $990 incl. GST. Complexes and older homes often need extra items, all listed up front.

In a unit complex, the biggest cost driver is distance between your meter and your car space. In an older house, it is usually the switchboard. Either way, we measure and inspect first and give you an itemised written quote.

We do not quote government rebates because availability changes. If you want to estimate savings, our EV charging vs petrol cost guide is a good starting point.

EV charger questions from Chermside

Can I install an EV charger in my Chermside unit car park?

Often yes, with body corporate approval. The charger is normally wired from your own meter to your allocated space so you pay for your own charging. We provide a written scope to support your application.

What does the body corporate need to approve?

Usually the cable route through common property, the mounting location, how the charger is metered and who maintains it. We supply those details in writing so the committee can make a decision.

Why is my unit quote higher than $990?

The standard price covers a short run near the board. In complexes the meter room can be well away from your car space, so the extra length is charged at $25 per metre. We measure it on site and show you the figure.

Does my post-war Chermside house need a new switchboard?

Only if the existing board cannot safely support the charger. Old fuses, no spare space or a low main switch rating are the usual reasons. If an upgrade is needed it is $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST.

Is 7 kW or 22 kW better for a Chermside home?

For most homes, 7 kW single-phase is the right choice and easily covers daily driving around the northside. A 22 kW charger needs three-phase supply and a car that accepts it. See our 7 kW vs 22 kW comparison.

Are there EV charger rebates in Chermside?

We do not quote rebates because programs change and may not apply to your situation. Check current state and federal programs before you buy. Our quote is the full price, incl. GST.

How long will the install take?

A standard house install usually takes a few hours. Unit installs with long car park runs, or homes needing a board upgrade, take longer. Read how long EV charger installation takes for more detail.
