What load management actually does
An EV charger is one of the biggest loads you can add to a home. Run a 7kW charger while the oven, hot water and air conditioner are all going, and an older supply can be pushed past its safe limit. Load management (also called dynamic load management or load balancing) solves this by monitoring your home’s total draw in real time and adjusting the charger’s output so the combined load stays within safe limits.
In practice that means the charger runs at full speed almost all the time, and only eases off during the rare moments your household is drawing heavy power. Since most EV charging happens overnight when demand is low, you barely notice it.
Do you need load management for your EV charger?
Not every home does. Plenty of Brisbane properties have enough spare capacity for a 7kW charger with no load management at all. It becomes relevant when:
- your switchboard or supply is already near its limit
- you want faster charging than your supply comfortably allows
- you are adding a charger to a home with high existing load (ducted air, pool, electric hot water)
