A staged air con plan for McDowall family homes
Most families do not need every room cooled on day one. They need the right rooms first, and a plan that does not paint them into a corner later.
McDowall is named after Colonel John McDowall, an early settler. Interestingly, the school took the name first: McDowall State School opened in January 1975 with just 36 students, and the Place Names Board accepted McDowall for the suburb that same year, after residents objected to the council's suggestion of Annand. The school has since grown to close to 1,000 students, and the suburb's population has climbed steadily to more than 7,600.
That picture, a suburb that took shape from the mid-1970s and is full of school-age families, shapes how we approach air con here. Homes from that era were generally built before air conditioning was standard, so many have one older unit in the living area and nothing in the bedrooms. Rather than quote for six splits at once, we look at the house as a whole and decide the order.
Planning ahead matters because each new unit needs a circuit, a condenser spot and a pipe route. If the first install uses the only good wall for a condenser, or fills the last space on the switchboard, the next room gets harder and dearer. A short plan on paper avoids that.
Connex Electrical is based in Mango Hill and services McDowall and its neighbours, including Aspley, Bridgeman Downs, Everton Park and Stafford Heights. Also see EV charger installation in McDowall and Electrician McDowall.
What a room-by-room plan includes
We list each room you might want cooled, the right unit size for it, where its indoor and outdoor units would go and the order we suggest. Usually that is main bedroom, living area, then children's rooms.
You get a written price for stage one and indicative pricing for the rest, so you can budget across a year or two.
Getting the switchboard ready once
Homes from the 1970s often have boards with limited space and older protection. Upgrading once, at the start, means every later unit is a simple circuit addition.
A switchboard upgrade is $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST, and each new air con circuit with an RCBO is $180 to $400 incl. GST.
When multi-head or ducted makes more sense
If you will eventually want four or more rooms cooled, a multi-head or ducted system can work out neater than lots of separate condensers. We show you the comparison so you can decide before stage one, and quote those systems after a free assessment.

McDowall air con FAQs
Which room should I air condition first in a family home?
Usually the main bedroom, then the living area. Children's rooms often come next, especially those on the western side that hold the afternoon heat. We help you rank them based on how your family uses the house.
Is it cheaper to install several splits at once?
There can be some saving on labour when units are installed on the same visit, but staging is perfectly fine if the plan is right. The bigger saving comes from upgrading the switchboard once rather than piecemeal.
Can I buy a unit on sale and have you install it?
Yes. Installation only on a standard back-to-back job is from $1,120 incl. GST. Check with us before buying so the size and model suit the room.
Should I replace my old living room unit or keep it?
If it still cools well and is not too noisy, keep it for now and spend on the rooms with nothing. If it struggles or uses an outdated refrigerant, replacing it may be the better first step.
Will lots of outdoor units clutter the yard?
They can if they are not planned. Grouping condensers along one side of the house, or using a multi-head system, keeps things tidy.
