Air con for Chermside units, townhouses and post-war homes
Chermside has changed fast, and the right install depends on whether you live in a post-war house or a new apartment.
This part of the northside was first known as Downfall Creek, after the creek that gave travellers to the Gympie goldfields so much trouble. It was renamed Chermside in 1904 after Governor Sir Herbert Chermside, and housing took off after World War II. Trams ran here until 1968, and Westfield Chermside opened in 1957 as Australia's first drive-in shopping centre.
Today Chermside is one of Brisbane's fastest-developing suburbs, with medium density growing around the shopping centre, The Prince Charles Hospital and St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside. That gives us two very different kinds of job. Units and townhouses need compact installs, tidy condenser placement and often a body corporate tick. Post-war houses are usually easier to mount on, but older wiring can need attention first.
The suburb is fairly flat, at around 25 metres elevation, with Downfall Creek near 7th Brigade Park. Flat blocks make ground-mounted condensers simple on houses, while balconies and courtyards in newer buildings need more thought about noise and airflow.
Connex Electrical is based in Mango Hill and services Chermside and the surrounding City of Brisbane northside suburbs. Also see EV charger installation in Chermside and Electrician Chermside.
Body corporate approval for units and townhouses
Most bodies corporate want to know where the condenser will go, how pipework will be hidden and how it affects common property. Get their approval in writing before booking the install.
We can provide the unit specifications, condenser dimensions and a description of the proposed location to help with your application.
Condensers on balconies and in courtyards
A condenser needs clear airflow and enough clearance from walls to work efficiently. On small balconies we look at wall brackets or a slim floor stand.
We also consider neighbours. Placing the condenser away from bedroom windows next door helps keep everyone happy.
Post-war houses and older switchboards
Older Chermside houses can still have original-style boards. A new circuit with an RCBO is $180 to $400 incl. GST if there is room, otherwise a switchboard upgrade may be recommended.

Chermside air conditioning FAQs
Do I need body corporate approval to install air con in my Chermside unit?
In most cases, yes. Condensers and pipework often affect common property or the look of the building, so check your by-laws and get written approval first. We can supply the specifications your committee needs.
Can the condenser go on my balcony?
Often it can, if there is enough clearance for airflow and your body corporate allows it. We may use a wall bracket or slim stand to save floor space.
What size air conditioner suits a one-bedroom apartment?
A 2.5 kW split usually suits the bedroom, while an open living area may need around 3.5 to 5 kW. Apartments often hold heat less than houses, so smaller units can do the job. Our sizing guide explains more.
Will my air con disturb the neighbours?
Modern inverter condensers are quiet, but placement still matters. We position them away from neighbouring bedroom windows where possible and mount them to reduce vibration.
Can one outdoor unit run several rooms in a townhouse?
Yes. A multi-head system connects two or three indoor units to one condenser, which helps when outdoor space is limited. These are quoted after a free assessment.
I own a post-war house in Chermside. Will my wiring cope?
Many older boards can take one new circuit, but some need upgrading. We check the board on our visit and quote any work separately, with switchboard upgrades from $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST.
I rent out a Chermside unit. Can you install for landlords?
Yes. We can liaise with you or your property manager on access and provide the paperwork you need. A certificate of compliance is issued for the electrical work.
