EV Charger Installation Sandgate
Sandgate's seaside streets were laid out for villas and coaches, not electric cars. We fit home chargers that suit character homes and stand up to air off Bramble Bay.

A charger that fits a heritage seaside town
Sandgate has been a bayside town since the 1880s, and the way a charger is placed on an older home matters as much as the wiring behind it.
Thomas Dowse settled the area in 1853, the railway came through in 1882, and town allotments were sold as seaside villa sites from 1879. Later subdivisions such as Garden Estate and Nashville Heights filled in the streets between the shoreline, Dowse Lagoon and the Deagon Wetlands. The result is a suburb where timber and character homes sit alongside heritage-listed buildings like the old Town Hall on Brighton Road and the former Post Office on Bowser Parade.
For an EV charger, that history raises practical questions. Where can the unit go so it is not the first thing you see from the footpath? Can the cable run under the floor or along a side wall instead of across a lovely old facade? Is the original switchboard, often tucked on a front verandah or hallway, still fit to carry a car charging for six hours at a time? We answer those on site first.
Then there is the bay. Homes close to Moora Park, Flinders Parade and the Lovers Walk towards Shorncliffe cop salty breezes off Bramble Bay. We favour chargers with a good weather rating, mount them out of direct spray where we can, and use fixings and glands that will not stain or seize in a few years.
We travel down from our Mango Hill base to Sandgate, about 20 km north-north-east of the CBD, and every install is carried out by a licensed Connex electrician. Also see Air conditioning installation in Sandgate and Electrician Sandgate.
Keeping the charger discreet on a character home
Most Sandgate owners want the charger handy to the car but low-key from the street. Side walls, carport posts and the inside of a rear garage are usually the best spots. We show you two or three options and the cable route for each.
If your home is heritage listed, check the rules on external changes before we start.
Older boards in older houses
Many Sandgate homes still run on boards with ceramic fuses or very little spare room. A charger needs its own protected circuit, and the board has to cope with a long overnight load on top of the fridge, hot water and air con.
If the board is not up to it, we will tell you plainly and price an upgrade at $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST. Our switchboard and EV charger guide explains the warning signs.
Salt air and outdoor chargers
Even a few streets back from the water, carport chargers see salt on the wind. We choose a suitable enclosure rating and seal every cable entry.
What we install in Sandgate
Every job starts with a look at the house itself, because a timber cottage and a newer rebuild need different approaches.
Standard 7 kW home charger
Single-phase wall charger on a dedicated circuit, fixed at $990 incl. GST for a standard run.
Discreet cable routing
Underfloor and side-wall routes that keep conduit off the front of your home. Extra length is $25 per metre.
Switchboard replacement
A modern board with RCBO protection when the old fuse board cannot safely take the charger.
Solar-matched charging
Chargers that soak up your rooftop surplus during the day. Quoted after we look at your inverter.

What a Sandgate EV charger install costs
A straightforward install with the charger near the board is $990 incl. GST. On older homes, the extras are usually about the board or a longer, tidier cable route.
Choosing a hidden route along the side of the house rather than straight across the front can add a few metres of cable. That is charged at $25 per metre, and we tell you the difference between options before you decide.
We do not include any rebate in our pricing. The figure you see on your written quote is what you pay, incl. GST.
| Typical Sandgate EV jobs | Price (incl. GST) |

Sandgate EV charger FAQs
Can an EV charger go on a heritage or character house in Sandgate?
Usually yes, and it can often be placed where it is barely visible from the street. If your home is heritage listed, check the rules on external changes first. We can suggest side or rear locations that keep the front of the house untouched.
My Sandgate home still has old fuses. Can I add a charger?
Not safely on most fuse boards. A charger needs its own RCBO-protected circuit, and old boards rarely have room or modern protection. An upgrade costs $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST and also makes the rest of the house safer.
Will living near Bramble Bay shorten the life of my charger?
It can if the charger is poorly sealed or fully exposed. Choosing a suitably rated unit, mounting it out of direct weather and rinsing it occasionally goes a long way. We seal every cable entry as part of the install.
I mostly catch the train from Sandgate station. Do I need a fast charger?
Probably not. If the car mostly does weekend and local trips, a standard 7 kW charger, or even slower charging overnight, is plenty. Our 7 kW vs 22 kW guide goes through the maths.
Can the charger cable run under my house?
Often, yes. Underfloor routes are common on older Sandgate homes and keep conduit off the walls. The extra length is charged at $25 per metre and shown on your quote.
Do you deal with Energex for me?
Yes. Where your connection requires it, we lodge the Energex electrical work request as part of the job. Our Energex EV charger rules article explains when it applies.
