Air conditioning that suits life on the bay

Redcliffe sits low on the western shore of Moreton Bay, at about 12 m above sea level, and the sea breeze carries salt a long way inland.

Salt is the main enemy of an outdoor unit here. It settles on the condenser coil and fins, corrodes unprotected fixings and shortens the life of a system that would last far longer in a dry inland suburb. For Redcliffe installs we recommend outdoor units with corrosion protection from the manufacturer, use stainless or galvanised fixings, and pick a spot that is sheltered from the direct sea breeze where possible.

The housing is just as varied as anywhere we work. Redcliffe has been settled since the 1800s, with early subdivisions such as Portwood Estate in 1878 and Ramsgate Estate in 1881, and it grew as a seaside resort long before the Hornibrook Bridge opened in 1935. Older character homes sit a few streets back from coastal high-rise, and the first high-rise went up on Marine Parade in 1974. Each type needs a different approach, from timber walls and old wiring to body corporate rules about where a condenser can go.

Comfort matters here too. Redcliffe's median age was 44 at the 2011 census, and about one in five residents was 65 or older. Reliable, quiet cooling for bedrooms and living areas is not a luxury for older residents in a humid January, which is also the wettest time of year on the peninsula.

We travel across from our Mango Hill base via Anzac Avenue to service the whole Redcliffe Peninsula. Also see EV charger installation in Redcliffe and Electrician Redcliffe.

How we protect outdoor units from salt air

We favour models with factory anti-corrosion coatings on the coil, mount them on stainless or galvanised brackets, and keep them off the most exposed side of the house where we can.

After installation, a regular rinse of the condenser with fresh water and a scheduled service will do more for its lifespan than anything else. See our guide on how often to service your air conditioner.

Units and apartments near the foreshore

In a strata building you usually need body corporate approval before installing an outdoor unit on a balcony or external wall. Bring us the by-laws and we will design the install around them, including where pipework and condensate can run.

Balcony installs are often quoted after an assessment because access, pipe runs and mounting can vary a lot.

Older character homes

Older houses can have aging wiring or a switchboard with no room for another circuit. We check this first, so you know if a switchboard upgrade is needed before the split goes in.

Switchboard checks and upgrades

Older Redcliffe homes may need board work before a new air con circuit can be added safely.

Coastal install checklist we follow
  • Corrosion-protected outdoor unit where available
  • Stainless or galvanised brackets and fixings
  • Sheltered condenser location where the layout allows
  • UV-stable pipe ducting on exposed walls
  • Condensate drain kept clear of paths and balconies
  • Weatherproof isolator at the outdoor unit
  • Advice on rinsing and servicing intervals
  • Certificate of compliance on completion

Our Redcliffe install process

Assess the exposure

We look at how close you are to the water, which wall cops the sea breeze and where the condenser can sit sheltered.

Check the wiring

Older homes get a switchboard and circuit check; units get a review of the body corporate rules.

Install with coastal fixings

Brackets, screws and ducting chosen to hold up in salt air, with neat pipe and drain runs.

Commission and advise

Pressure test, vacuum and commission, then a simple maintenance plan to keep salt from shortening the unit's life.

Redcliffe air conditioning FAQs

Do I need a special air conditioner because I live near the water in Redcliffe?

A corrosion-protected outdoor unit is strongly recommended within sight or smell of the bay. Many brands offer factory coatings on the condenser coil that resist salt. We combine that with stainless or galvanised fixings and a sheltered location.

How long will an air conditioner last in salt air?

It depends heavily on placement and care. A unit on a sheltered wall that is rinsed and serviced regularly will last much longer than one facing the sea breeze and left alone. We give you a simple maintenance routine at handover.

Can I install a split system in my Redcliffe apartment?

Usually, but you will need body corporate approval for the outdoor unit and any external pipework. We can design the install to suit the by-laws and supply details for your application. Balcony installs are quoted after an assessment.

My Redcliffe house is older. Will I need a switchboard upgrade?

Sometimes. If the board is full, outdated or lacks safety switches, we will recommend an upgrade before adding a new air con circuit. Upgrades cost $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST, and we tell you at the quote stage, not on install day.

Is it worth replacing an old corroded unit or repairing it?

If the coil or casing is badly corroded, replacement is usually better value than repair. We check the condition honestly and give you both options where repair makes sense. Our servicing team can assess an existing unit first.

What size unit suits a Redcliffe living room?

It depends on the room size, ceiling height, windows and sun. Older homes with higher ceilings and less insulation may need more capacity than a similar-sized modern room. We measure on site rather than guessing.

Do you work across the whole Redcliffe Peninsula?

Yes. We travel from Mango Hill and work throughout Redcliffe and the surrounding peninsula suburbs. Call 0474 207 609 to book a free quote.
