One suburb, three very different installs
Burpengary's history explains why no two charger jobs here look the same.
The town started in the 1870s around timber-cutting and grew as a big truck stop on the old North Coast Road, today's Bruce Highway, which now forms the suburb's eastern boundary. Older homes there sit alongside newer ones, and an older home can still have an original or patched-up switchboard. Since 2005, planned communities, M1 access and a growing shopping precinct have driven growth, and in 2013 Burpengary was named one of the region's fastest-growing residential areas.
That gives us three common situations. Newer estate homes usually suit our standard fixed-price install. Older homes often need the switchboard brought up to date first. And acreage and horse properties, in a suburb that is home to the Burpengary Equestrian Centre and bordered by Burpengary Creek in the southwest, often mean the car is parked a long way from the meter box.
The population rose from 14,022 in 2016 to 16,488 in 2021, and Burpengary sits about 9 km south of Caboolture with its own station on the North Coast line. Whether you drive to the station, run errands at Burpengary Plaza or commute down the highway, charging at home is the most convenient way to run an EV here.
We come up the Bruce Highway from our Mango Hill base. Connex Electrical was established in 2014 and is led by Darren Standring, a qualified electrician since 1997. Also see Air conditioning installation in Burpengary and Electrician Burpengary.
Older Burpengary homes: switchboard first, charger second
If your home predates the post-2005 estates, we check for rewireable fuses, missing safety switches and a full board. A charger is a long, heavy load, and an older board needs to be in good order to carry it.
Where an upgrade is needed, it is $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST. Find out more on our switchboard upgrade page.
Horse properties and acreage: chargers in stables, sheds and carports
On equestrian and rural blocks, the car or float vehicle often lives in a shed near the stables. We check the existing sub-main, run new cable where needed, and charge $25 per metre for cable beyond the standard run.
Outbuildings can be dusty and damp, so we use an outdoor-rated charger and enclosure and mount it clear of where hoses and gear are used.
New estate homes: usually the simplest case
Homes built in Burpengary's planned communities generally have modern boards and attached garages close to them. That usually fits the fixed $990 incl. GST install with a charger you supply.
If you have solar, we can set the charger to use spare generation. See EV charging from solar.

Burpengary EV charger questions answered
My Burpengary home is older. Can it take an EV charger?
Most can, but older boards often need upgrading first. We check for old fuses, missing safety switches and space on the board. Upgrades cost $1,320 to $3,850 incl. GST.
Can I put a charger in the stable shed on my horse property?
Yes. We run a suitable circuit to the shed and fit an outdoor-rated charger. Cable beyond the standard run is $25 per metre incl. GST.
What is included in the $990 price?
Installing a single-phase 7 kW charger you have supplied, on a standard run from the switchboard, with its circuit, testing and a certificate of compliance. Extra cable, board upgrades and solar setups are priced separately.
Can I charge my EV from solar in Burpengary?
Yes, if you have solar panels and a compatible charger. We fit a sensor and configure the charger to use surplus solar. This is quoted per home.
Do I need an electrician to install a wall charger?
Yes. A hard-wired charger must be installed by a licensed electrician and certified. We also lodge the Energex EWR where it is required.
Is a three-phase charger worth it?
Only if you have a three-phase supply and a car that can use it. Three-phase 22 kW installs are $1,500 to $2,200 incl. GST. Read our 7 kW vs 22 kW guide.
