Why an EV charger puts demand on your switchboard

A home EV charger isn’t like plugging in a kettle. A standard single-phase 7kW Level 2 charger draws around 32 amps continuously, often for hours overnight. That’s one of the largest sustained loads in the house — comparable to a big ducted air conditioner running flat out. Your switchboard has to do three things to handle it safely:

  • Have a spare way to add a dedicated circuit just for the charger (EV chargers must not share a circuit).
  • Provide the right safety protection — an RCD (safety switch) suited to EV charging, typically Type A or Type B.
  • Have enough overall capacity so that adding the charger doesn’t overload the main supply.

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading before an EV charger

You can get a rough idea yourself before we even visit. Take a photo of your open switchboard (careful — look, don’t touch) and check for these:

1. Ceramic fuses (rewireable fuses)

Round ceramic fuse holders with fuse wire are a clear sign of an older board. They offer no RCD protection and generally can’t safely accommodate an EV circuit. These almost always need upgrading.

2. No safety switches (RCDs)

If you don’t have RCDs — the switches with a “T” or “Test” button — your board lacks the shock protection modern wiring rules require, and an EV charger circuit needs proper RCD protection.

3. A full board with no spare space

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit. If every slot on your board is already used, there’s nowhere to add it without reconfiguring or upgrading.

4. Signs of age or damage

Scorch marks, a burning smell, buzzing, warm switches, or an asbestos-backed board (common in homes built before the mid-1980s) all mean the board should be addressed before adding a major load.

5. Limited main supply capacity

Some older homes have a smaller main supply that’s already close to its limit with modern appliances. Adding a 7kW charger may tip it over, which can mean upgrading the main switch, the board, or in some cases the supply itself. We check this during assessment.

When you probably DON’T need an upgrade

Plenty of North Brisbane homes are ready to go as-is. You’re likely fine if your board has:

  • Modern circuit breakers (not ceramic fuses).
  • Existing RCD safety switches.
  • Spare space for at least one more circuit.

Can I add the EV circuit without a full board upgrade?

Often, yes. If your board is fundamentally sound — modern breakers, RCD protection, adequate capacity — but simply full, the fix can be as small as freeing up space, adding a subboard, or fitting the dedicated EV circuit with its own protection. A full board replacement is the exception, not the rule. The only way to know which camp you’re in is a proper assessment, but many homeowners are pleasantly surprised it’s the smaller job.
