How Safe Is Your Switchboard? | Brisbane Safety Assessment

How Safe Is Your Switchboard

Signs Your Switchboard May Be Putting Your Family at Risk

Most homeowners never think about their switchboard until something goes wrong — a circuit trips, lights flicker or worse, they smell burning. But your switchboard is the most critical safety component in your home's electrical system. An unsafe switchboard can cause electrocution, electrical fires and property damage. For homeowners across North Lakes, Redcliffe, Mango Hill, Chermside and Aspley, here is how to assess whether your switchboard is safe.

Quick Safety Checklist

CheckSafeUnsafe
Fuses or breakers?Circuit breakers (MCBs)Ceramic rewirable fuses
Safety switches?RCDs on all circuitsNo RCDs or only on 1-2 circuits
Board condition?Clean, no damage, clearly labelledRust, scorch marks, burning smell
Spare capacity?Room for additional circuitsBoard is completely full
Age?Upgraded in last 15 yearsOriginal board, 25+ years old
Asbestos?Non-asbestos enclosureAsbestos backing (pre-1990)

The Most Dangerous Switchboard Issues

1. No Safety Switches

Without safety switches on all circuits, a fault in any appliance or wiring can deliver a fatal electric shock. Safety switches trip within 30 milliseconds — without them, the current continues until a circuit breaker eventually trips, which can take seconds.

2. Ceramic Fuses

Rewirable ceramic fuses are the oldest and least safe type of circuit protection. They provide no earth leakage protection, can be incorrectly rewired with the wrong fuse wire, and do not trip as reliably as modern circuit breakers.

3. Overheating and Scorch Marks

If you can see discolouration, melted plastic or scorch marks on or around your switchboard, there is active overheating. This is an emergency — turn off the main switch and call an emergency electrician immediately.

4. Overloaded Board

A switchboard with no spare circuit positions cannot safely accommodate new appliances like air conditioning, EV chargers or solar systems. Adding circuits to a full board requires a switchboard upgrade.

Switchboard Upgrade Costs

ServiceTypical Cost Range (AUD)
Safety switch installation (all circuits)$400 – $800
Basic switchboard upgrade$800 – $1,800
Full switchboard replacement$1,500 – $3,500
Three-phase upgrade$2,500 – $5,000+
Electrical safety inspection$200 – $400

Which Brisbane Suburbs Have the Most Unsafe Switchboards?

Suburbs with older housing stock have the highest rates of non-compliant switchboards. These include Aspley, Everton Park, Stafford, Wavell Heights, Redcliffe, Petrie, Kallangur and Caboolture.

An electrical safety inspection is the best way to assess your switchboard's condition and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my switchboard is safe?

Check for circuit breakers (not ceramic fuses), safety switches on all circuits, no scorch marks or burning smells, and adequate spare capacity.

How much does a switchboard safety check cost?

An electrical safety inspection that includes switchboard assessment costs $200 to $400.

Do I need safety switches on all circuits?

Yes. Modern standards and best practice require safety switches on all circuits for maximum protection.

Can an old switchboard cause a house fire?

Yes. Overheating connections, ceramic fuses with incorrect fuse wire and overloaded circuits in old switchboards are significant fire risks.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most switchboard upgrades are completed in 4 to 6 hours. Power will be off for part of this time.
